Its Flu Pandemic Jim, but not as we know it!

The World Health Organisation (WHO) now believes that we are already in the midst of a kind of a Flu Pandemic.

It is not the full blown 1918 type pandemic though.

Not as yet.

The WHO’s assistant director for communicable diseases, David Heymann, says that the full blown Flu Pandemic hasn’t occurred as yet but the current pandemic alert level allows for occasional transmission from person to person.

Commenting on the “family clusters” mentioned in the recent Fred Hutchinson research study of H5N1 infection, he told Radio Australia, that it is likely that close contact between the family members in Sumatra allowed the virus to transmit.

“Well in this instance it’s likely that it was droplets from a cough or some kind of close contact, even saliva having been contaminated from one to the other,” he said.

So it is a “Pandemic Light” for now.

The WHO has long warned that if the virus mutates into a form that is easily spread between humans, it could trigger a global pandemic.

Mind you, there are some, such as Siti Fadilah Supari, the Indonesian Health Minister, who do not agree with the WHO in this matter.

Earlier this week, Madam Siti Fadilah Supari denied news reports quoting a research study by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington saying that bird flu was spread between humans in Indonesia last year.

“There is no human to human infection of the Bird-Flu virus in Indonesia”, said Siti Fadilah Supari, the Indonesian Health Minister
