Writing for the Daily Times of Pakistan, Zar Nageen quotes a member of the Wholesalers Poultry Farms Association, Kamal Akhter Siddiqui, confirming the presence of the H5N1 virus in Karachi.
“The virus is currently present in the Layer hens, not the Broilers, and news about the spread of the H5N1 virus is absolutely correct,” Siddiqui told Daily Times.”virus is currently present in the Layer hens, not the Broilers” ???
Hmmmm. This seems to be a unique Pakistani version of the H5N1 virus, which KNOWS not to infect the more popular and therefore more expensive “Broilers” as opposed to the cheaper “Hens”!!!
However, it is what Kamal Akhter Siddiqui says next that can brings a chill to the readers in the west.
“It is a disease, and steps are being taken to control it.” he says explaining the steps taken due to the above problem, “Vehicles used to transport chicken are being washed daily as are the places where chicken are slaughtered. “We are also vaccinating the birds against the virus. We are trying our best to control this disease right now – any chicken which show even the slightest sign of any sort of disease are being quarantined.”
I see! I wonder as to what kind of a standard of hygiene had been practiced before the outbreak?
