Questions are being asked in the British Parliament, about a pay out by the British Government, to the Turkey factory farm Company, owned by the Brit Turkey Tycoon Bernard Matthews of almost £700,000.
The cause of the recent bird flu breakout at the turkey factory farm has not as yet been announced by DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs).
However, in response to a question in the House of Lords from the liberal democrat Lord Dykes the Junior DEFRA minister Lord Rooker admitted that: “No evidence of H5N1 has been found other than in the Bernard Matthews plant at Holton. It appears that this is exclusively a Bernard Matthews Holten problem. There is no evidence of H5N1 anywhere in the wild bird, intensive poultry or free-range poultry populations in this country.”
Bernard Matthews, who faces prosecution for possible bio security breaches, should be fined instead of being offered compensation, according to the Lib Dem environment spokesman Chris Huhne. “Talk of compensation at this stage seems woefully misplaced. I would prefer it if DEFRA was talking about fines.” he said.
To make matters worse Free-range poultry keepers across a large swathe of Norfolk and Suffolk who have only now been allowed to let their birds outside for the first time in almost four weeks, are to get no compensation of any kind.
